Rep. Israel Announces $3.9 Million in Funding for Pilot Program to Help Small Businesses Harness New Energy Technologies
Federal Funding Will Help LI Businesses Deploy Cost-Saving Energy Technologies and Harness New Energy Resources as Test Beds for Renewable Technologies
Melville NY— Wednesday, Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington) joined with LIPA President Kevin Law and local business leaders to announce a new program to help businesses deploy new clean energy technologies. The federal funding will allow LIPA to work with small businesses and manufacturers like D’Addario in Farmingdale to deploy renewable energy technologies in order to test their efficiency, harness new clean energy resources for thriving small businesses and assess how they interface with the energy grid on Long Island. The event took place at Leviton Manufacturing, a LI-based leading manufacturer of electrical and lighting energy efficiency products, that recently worked with LIPA on energy incentives so it could relocate to Long Island from Queens.
“Businesses on Long Island are innovators—they use cutting edge technologies to manufacture their products more efficiently, but they want to cut their energy bills in order to stay on Long Island and keep jobs here,” Israel said. “This pilot program will foster deployments of advanced energy technologies and allow businesses around Long Island to see what clean energy resources work best for them.”
LIPA President and CEO Kevin Law said, "LIPA remains committed to partnering with businesses throughout Long Island to invest in energy efficiency and renewable energy, thus helping them to lower their utility costs, reduce their carbon footprint and promote a clean energy economy. I thank Congressman Israel for securing millions in federal funding to continue to promote energy efficiency and renewable programs. His continued leadership on energy issues is to be applauded."
Leviton CEO/President Don Hendler said, “LIPA’s new federally funding program will help Long Island based companies operate more efficiently. By working with LIPA, we received the customized support we needed to achieve our efficiency goals and establish our world headquarters along Long Island’s corporate corridor. LIPA is also helping drive awareness of essential technologies like daylighting, occupancy detection and wireless control systems that enable commercial energy users to reduce their energy use and carbon footprint. I applaud Congressman Israel’s efforts in obtaining funding for this critical program.”
Leviton is a Melville-based manufacturer and developer of electrical wiring devices, data center connectivity solutions and lighting energy management systems. This, LIPA worked with Leviton Manufacturing to support their global corporate headquarters’ relocation from Queens to Long Island. This project included the installation of high performance lighting, occupancy sensors and other efficiency measures. In total, Leviton Manufacturing qualified for $48,955 in LIPA rebates with plans to cut its energy demand by an 141 kilowatts (kW) and its electric energy usage by an 646,433 kilowatt hours (kWh) per year, resulting in savings of approximately $116,000 annually.
D'Addario is a family-owned musical instrument manufacturer in Farmingdale. It has a long history of using cutting edge technologies to keep manufacturing on Long Island instead of moving to a cheaper site outside of New York. It is a family-owned-and-operated business that is one of the largest string manufacturers in the world.
Rep. Israel serves on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water, which passed this funding as part of the Fiscal Year 2011 Energy and Water Appropriations Bill on July 15, 2010. He is the co-chairman of the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition.
