HUNDREDS OF LONG ISLAND TEACHERS JOIN IN SUPPORT OF
UNIONDALE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS
Hundreds of teachers representing over ten school districts from all over Long Island recently joined forces to support Uniondale teachers who have been working without a contract for two years. The show of solidarity from Long Island educators comes at a time when the Uniondale School District and teachers are at a stalemate in contract negotiations. Teachers accuse the district of negotiating using unreasonable demands and attempting to undercut the educational progress achieved in one of the Island’s most diverse communities.
“Uniondale teachers are extremely committed to their students, many who come from culturally diverse and economically challenged families,” said Jeff Rozran of the Syosset Teachers Association and Board Member of NYSUT. Teachers accuse that the School District has been negotiating with unrealistic expectations and often undermining the contribution made by faculty members. “The focus of the contract negotiations must be on the children and the need for quality education,” said Paul Marconi, of the Uniondale Teachers Association. “There are teachers in the Uniondale community that have taught multiple generations and not recognizing this significant contribution by offering a fair contract borders on being insulting,” he added.
“It’s very important that teachers come together during these times to support one another and working without a contract for more than two-years is not good practice. It hurts those professionals who contribute so much to our children’s development,” expressed Mel Stern, president of the Half Hollow Hills School District who joined to support the Uniondale event.
Many local community organizations and parents and families are joining to support the teachers and are calling upon the Uniondale School District to negotiate fairly and with the students and their education in mind. Additional demonstrations are planned by the Uniondale Teacher’s Association. For more information you can log onto their website at: http://www.uniondaleta.org
